The Story of Tenwek

Tenwek is a missionary hospital that began in 1937 as a single-nurse dispensary. Tenwek has now grown to a 260-bed hospital and training center with five operating rooms.

In 2010, the hospital treated 120,000 outpatients, 14,000 inpatients, and performed over 3,000 major surgeries.

Tenwek Hospital is well equipped compared to the poor neighboring villages.

I spent 7 days working with surgeons Dr. Rowe and Dr. Galat. In that time, I assisted with or observed about 30 surgeries.

My routine from 7 am-9 am in the morning included rounds, checking on post-ops, examining x-rays, and planning the surgeries for the day. From  9am-5pm I assisted with or observed surgeries.
